Arsenal icon Jack Wilshere has emerged as a surprise contender to take over as head coach at Aberdeen, according to reports. 

The Scottish Premiership side is keen to take their time with their appointment in the wake of this week’s sacking of Barry Robson, following a tepid 1-1 draw on Tuesday against Dundee at Pittodrie. 

Also sacked by the board was his assistant Steve Agnew, with interim coach Peter Leven preparing to lead the side against Celtic on Saturday afternoon. 

The storied journeyman manager is thought to be one of the leading contenders to take up the role, alongside formed Stoke City head coach Alex Neil.

But the former Gunners midfielder could prove a surprise candidate for the Scottish club. 

As per the Daily Record, Wilshere is believed to have applied for the role whilst still serving as Arsenal Under-18s head coach. 

The 32-year-old has served in the role since 2022, last season leading the side to the final of the FA Youth Cup, where they finished as runners-up to West Ham. 

But Aberdeen are thought to be less certain on Wilshere’s appointment, due to his lack of experience – following a difficult season with Robson. 

Pitching for the top spot at Aberdeen is the second time this season that Wilshere has sought to gain a first-team senior coaching role.

Wilshere was one of the candidates assessed by MLS side Colorado Rapids last autumn, and the former player is believed to have ‘impressed’ in his interview. 

However, the role eventually went to Chris Armas, who has previously coached at MLS clubs Toronto FC and New York Red Bulls, and served as a coaching assistant at Manchester United and Leeds.
