A mother is currently battling for survival following a suspected incident of domestic violence in Sydney.

Lauren Hopkins, aged 47, was reportedly assaulted in her Redfern residence, with her son, Mitchell Hopkins, age 30, being the alleged attacker.

Authorities and paramedics were summoned to the 16th floor of the Morehead Street apartment complex at 4:30 pm yesterday.

The 47 year-old was unresponsive, suffering critical head injuries.

9News understands police will allege the mother was bashed inside the unit and no weapon was involved.

Mitchell Hopkins has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

The 30-year-old appeared via video link as his matter was briefly mentioned at a Parramatta court.

He didn’t apply for bail.

He will now undergo a mental health assessment and remains behind bars, with his next court date set for July 10.
