Two plead guilty in murder of Jacksonville 7-year-old

A man and a teenage boy who are accused in the shooting death of the 7-year-old, which happened in January, have now pleaded guilty.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man and a teenage boy have admitted guilt in the case of the murder of 7-year-old Breon Allen from Jacksonville, as revealed by court records in Duval County.

Zharod Sykes and 17-year-old Tavaris Kelly are both charged with second-degree murder.

These two are among six individuals taken into custody related to the shooting incident. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office identifies Kelly as one of the gunmen involved.

The incident occurred on January 24 near Commonwealth Avenue and Almeda Street on the Westside of the city. Authorities stated that several shooters targeted 21-year-old Lafayette Mango and Breon. While Mango sustained injuries, Breon’s life was tragically lost.

Sykes and four others of those arrested were connected to 6Block, a well-known gang in Jacksonville linked to the late rapper Foolio.

“It was a targeted, planned act of bloodshed,” Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters said of the shooting.

Sykes will be in court on Oct. 1. His sentencing date has not yet been set.

Kelly will be in court on Aug. 21, and his sentencing date has also not been set.
