NORTH CODORUS, Pa. (AP) — Authorities reported that at least two individuals were seriously wounded in a police-involved shooting in southern Pennsylvania on Wednesday. Governor Josh Shapiro is hurrying to the location, according to officials.

An investigation is currently underway in North Codorus Township, approximately 115 miles (185 km) west of Philadelphia and near the Maryland border, officials confirmed.

York Hospital announced that two individuals in serious condition are receiving treatment as a result of a police-related incident in northern York County. The hospital has implemented enhanced security measures.

Attorney General Pamela Bondi said that multiple police officers were shot, calling violence against them “a scourge on our society.

“Please keep the officers and all those affected by the shooting in York County in your prayers,” Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. Austin Davis urged in a social media message.

State Attorney General Dave Sunday is also headed to the site. On social media, he asked “all residents to heed the local law enforcement instructions” and expressed he is “praying for everyone involved.”

A nearby school district enforced a shelter-in-place directive, even though students and schools were not directly involved in the shooting. This order was lifted later in the afternoon. The district released a statement noting that authorities “instructed us to keep students and staff inside our buildings as a precautionary measure while several area roads remain closed.”

The medical response unfolded on a rural road in south-central Pennsylvania that winds through an agricultural area with a barn and farm fields.

The Consulate of Mexico in Philadelphia said in a social media post that they were “monitoring the incident” in Pennsylvania and advised Mexican residents nearby to follow official instructions. A spokesperson for the Mexican consulate in Philadelphia said the post was “only a precautionary alert for our community.

Police have not provided any details about who was involved in the shooting. Officers were keeping people well back from the scene in the area’s rolling farmland, with some 30 police vehicles blocking off roads bordered by a barn, a goat farm and soybean and corn fields.

“Pennsylvania State Police, Northern Regional Police and numerous emergency responders are at the scene. The York County Commissioners are monitoring the situation closely and praying for all those involved,” the county said in a statement.
