'Uncancel those NFL plans': American media slam Ryder Cup display

American sport fans were told to ‘uncancel those NFL Sunday plans’ as Team USA’s stars were ripped into for their ‘nightmare’ Ryder Cup performance.

Team Europe enters the final day at Bethpage Black with a historic seven-point lead after another dominant performance in both Saturday sessions.

If that wasn’t dramatic enough, the tournament took a negative turn on Saturday with fans and players almost coming to physical confrontations during a highly tense day filled with hostility and uncouth behavior.

As the event nears its final day, American media outlets have been harshly criticizing Keegan Bradley, his team, and their ‘disorderly’ fans.

One of those outlets was the New York Post, who claimed that this year’s Ryder Cup was ‘another American embarrassment’.

‘By early evening, tickets for Sunday’s matches were available for less than half the price of their $750 face value,’ they wrote.

Meanwhile, in an article by Sports Illustrated on Sunday, it was stated: ‘Spotting the American shortcomings at Bethpage Black on Saturday was straightforward, and a scoreboard wasn’t necessary.

‘You didn’t even have to open your eyes. Just listen to the crowd. The fans were profane, rude, poorly timed, and not as witty as they assumed they were.’

As USA Today reports: ‘There’s no need to cancel NFL Sunday plans. There’s nothing noteworthy happening at the 2025 Ryder Cup on its concluding day of 12 singles matches.

‘Unless you’re European or supporting Europe. In that case, tune in and enjoy the triumph that should leave the American team officially embarrassed by the time the sun sets on Sunday at Bethpage Black.’

Finally, CBS Sports said: ‘Two days, four sessions and 16 matches into the 2025 Ryder Cup, this international competition is no longer a lifelong dream for the skipper but a certified nightmare he cannot escape.’

Despite his defiant claims prior to the tournament, US captain Keegan Bradley has since found himself on the backfoot amid poor performances and fan chaos.

On a day when the notorious New Yorkers finally found their voice – for better and definitely for worse – Europe continued to humiliate the Americans on their own turf.

However, the carnage from the infamously rabid New York sports fans that had long been prophesized, finally reared its ugly head at the Ryder Cup.

Personalized abuse was hurled at the European stars, public enemy No 1 Rory McIlroy in particular, before the players themselves began lashing out in retaliation and Bethpage almost witnessed a repeat of the renowned caddie spat of Marco Simone on a highly-charged, frantic afternoon.

But Keegan refused to condemn the bedlam, as he characterized it as passion from the home supporters.

‘I thought the fans were passionate,’ he told reporters. ‘I mean, their home team is getting beat bad. You know, they are passionate fans. I wasn’t at Rome, but I heard a lot of stories that Rome was pretty violent as well.

‘But the fans of New York from what I have seen have been pretty good. You’re always going to have a few people that cross the line, and that’s unfortunate. I was happy to see our players trying to quiet down some people that were like that.’

Bradley then appeared to suggest that the blame lay in part on his team and their failure to rise to the occasion.

‘Part of it our fault,’ he added. ‘We are not playing up to the standards that they want to see, and they are angry, and they should be.’

However, he performed a hasty U-turn when pressed on the issue, insisting that he did not hold his players responsible.

‘I did not say that. That’s not what I said. I said the fans are probably upset that their home team is losing. I did not say that,’ he defiantly said, after being questioned on his comment.

During Saturday’s session, McIlroy refused to play a shot at the Ryder Cup after the American crowd hurled repeated abusive insults in his direction.

The Northern Irishman was lining up for a putt during his and Shane Lowry’s Saturday afternoon fourballs victory over Justin Thomas and Cameron Young when tensions boiled over.

He stepped away from his shot twice at the sixth hole – and was subsequently booed – before waiting a total of four minutes for the atmosphere to calm down.

The atmosphere at Bethpage Black has been increasingly toxic amid Team Europe’s domination, with Luke Donald’s side going into the final day with a record-breaking 11.5-4.5 lead.

They only require three more points to secure a win and it looks like it could be a landslide.
