President Trump’s unlikely rapport with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has endured well beyond Election Day and the city’s sweeping Democratic victory.
In an interview set to air Sunday, Mamdani told Fox News’ Shannon Bream that neither leader is overly focused on who initiates their conversations. Instead, he said, the priority is addressing what matters most to New Yorkers.
“It varies,” Mamdani said. “And I think that speaks to the fact that nobody’s very precious about who’s calling or who’s texting.
“It’s just, what’s the conversation about? If it’s New York City, I’m there.”

The two leaders developed an unexpected relationship during their first meeting at the White House last November. The encounter came despite Mamdani previously labeling Trump a “fascist” and Trump criticizing the mayor as a “communist.”
They held another private meeting in the Oval Office in February and have remained in touch through phone calls and text messages. In September, they met at Gracie Mansion to discuss immigration and a Queens housing development for which Mamdani is seeking federal assistance.

Mamdani, a former Queens state legislator, has worked to find common ground with Trump, who was born in the borough. He has emphasized Trump’s background in construction while requesting $21 billion in federal funding to build affordable housing at Sunnyside Yard.
