Palm Beach grande dame spits fire at 'new money' Netflix co-stars

When it comes to fiery social conflicts, this one’s a real standout.

Gale Brophy, a prominent figure in Palm Beach, has publicly criticized a fellow participant in the new Netflix reality series spotlighting the wealthy Florida community. In a candid interview with the Daily Mail, she labeled her co-star a “mean girl liar.”

The 70-year-old Brophy was chosen to bring an air of tradition to the popular show, “Members Only: Palm Beach.” She expressed strong dislike for newcomer socialite Taja Abitbol and isn’t particularly fond of the show’s 22-year veteran, Hilary Musser, either.

“I have no regrets about participating in the show. I believe I represented Palm Beach exceptionally well,” Brophy shared during our exclusive conversation.

She elaborated, “I’ve been a resident for over four decades, serving on the boards of nearly every charity and engaging in half of the community’s activities.”

Nonetheless, she admitted, “There is one individual I utterly detest, someone who is perpetually dishonest. It deeply hurts and disturbs me.”

‘Taja [Abitbol] lies about almost everything and then she back tracks her stories and comes out with a different one.

‘I dislike anyone in the world that lies. I mean every time she opens her mouth it’s a lie. She’s a horrific liar.’

The former successful racehorse owner and breeder continued: ‘Taja is just out there every day saying horrible mean things. I would label her a mean girl. She’s a bully, she’s tried to bully me.

‘I have a very good reputation on the island and she has torn apart my integrity, my honesty.

‘If you watch the show, at the beginning she says, “I know Gale, she’s such a great person.” But that’s not the case, she’s very jealous.’

Brophy then touched on her feelings about Musser, adding: ‘And so is Hilary. Hilary’s very jealous, but she doesn’t blame me for anything.’

Netflix has been heavily promoting the eight-part series featuring real estate developer Musser, ‘hospitality industry innovator’ Abitbol, ‘aspiring singer and fashion designer’ Ro-mina Ustayev, ‘former tech entrepreneur and DJ’ Maria Cozamanis and ‘passionate philanthropist’ Rosalyn Yellin.

It follows the women as they navigate friendships and rivalries and who will be the ‘true queen of Palm Beach,’ according to the streaming giant’s blurb.

Two established Palm Beach socialites – or ‘powerhouses’ as Netflix brands them – play supporting roles: 70-year-old Brophy and ‘fashionista’ Suebelle Robbins, 76.

The show resonates with the current new money versus establishment battle raging in the exclusive beach town, as waves of super-rich hedge funders and tech tycoons continue to make their way there and challenge the old-world order.

Viewers have watched as Musser and 54-year-old Yellin have feuded, pouty Abitbol, 53, has flounced and tattooed Cozamanis, 51, has regularly dropped the F-bomb. Meanwhile a desperate looking Ustayev, 39, has been raising eyebrows for her ‘tacky’ dress sense and ‘loudness’.

Amid all this is Brophy, who owns two boutique estates in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains and was a co-owner of 1991 Kentucky Derby winner Strike the Gold with her former husband Giles, who died after they divorced.

In the early 2000s she was living between Dubai, New York and Florida and counts herself among Palm Beach royalty.

The searing animosity between Brophy and Abitbol surfaced publicly when the latter had Brophy ejected from a party she was hosting late last year, alleging the society lynchpin drank from other guests’ champagne glasses.

Brophy told the Daily Mail she was ‘kicked out of the party because Taja didn’t want me to get a lot of the publicity… and she backtracked a story that I was drinking’.

She added: ‘But I was not drinking. I am a little wobbly in my heels. Everybody knows that I rode horses all my life and I need a hip replacement. I did actually have two hip replacements, but they were done at the age of 45.

‘She set me up as a publicity stunt to have me removed.’

Abitbol hit back in explosive detail to the Daily Mail, branding Brophy a ‘liar’ herself and ‘a very envious person’ who is ‘now playing the victim’.

Of the party incident, Abitbol said she hosted the 400-guest event at a $50million mansion in the exclusive Bears Club in Jupiter, Florida.

‘Gale was drinking out of the already drunk out of glasses at the entrance,’ she maintained. ‘So the security asked me, “do you know who this is? They look like they’re on something and they’re screaming at everybody saying they’re the queen of Palm Beach”.’

‘I said, yes she’s a guest. And then she came in and was very aggressive with me and threatened a lawsuit. I don’t know what over.

‘She just kept saying “there’s going to be a lawsuit here tonight.” But apparently she does that a lot.’

Abitbol continued: ‘She’s spreading horrific rumors that are untrue. She lies about everything. Everybody knows that. And somehow I became her target because I guess I have what she wants.

‘Don’t you think she would want a celebrity hot husband who’s a five times World Series champion? She’s obsessed with celebrity. I am not.’

Meanwhile, some of Brophy’s friends in Palm Beach have confided to the Daily Mail they were surprised she took part in the show.

But it was not the first time she’d embraced the cameras. She was also a cast member in Bravo production Snowbirds, about New York City socialites wintering in Palm Beach. However, filming has reportedly stumbled, and the planned series has not aired.

‘I had filmed Snowbirds and I enjoyed that. Everybody got along, which is probably why the show never got off the ground,’ she observed.

‘Regarding this series, I own the estates on 1,200 acres in the Catskills and I thought it would be a good marketing tools for those resorts.

‘Also, the old guard in Palm Beach is getting older and we need these younger girls to come into charity events so we can raise money to help others.’

Friends had also remarked Brophy was off the Palm Beach scene for a while and then returned, much slimmer, with a vengeance prior to filming the Netflix extravaganza.

She talked frankly about the ’embarrassment’ of gaining weight due to her hip condition while living more in the Catskills and the Hamptons.

‘I did have a weight gain and I was embarrassed with it,’ she said. ‘Because I always like to represent myself as perfect. But it was due to medical reasons.

‘I returned to Palm Beach about five years ago, but kept a lower profile. Because I’d had the weight gain and I didn’t feel good about it. Fashion is my favorite thing and the way I look is extremely important to me.

‘I was very reclusive. I just lived a quiet normal life with close friends down here. Then I had gall bladder surgery, and the weight came right off.’

Brophy said she became involved in the Netflix series following of her association with Yellin. ‘I didn’t know any of the others prior to the show,’ she said. ‘Two of the girls are not very nice, but it’s good entertainment.’

The Daily Mail previously revealed that old-guard society insiders have a disdainful view of most of the cast representing the ‘real’ Palm Beach.

‘It’s all very embarrassing and completely unrepresentative of the true Palm Beach,’ one society icon politely dished. ‘We should really view the whole thing as an unrealistic comedy.’

Another veteran Palm Beach insider was more scathing, saying: ‘Some of those gals look like they just fell off the turnip truck, no matter how big their monthly payment for a Porsche or G-Wagon.’

Meanwhile, despite frequent boasts of ‘living on the island’, none of the five principals in the Netflix series actually has a home in Palm Beach – and it’s believed no one was filmed there. Two of the wannabes live at least 30 miles away in Boca Raton.

Only five-times married Musser, 60, has hovered around the exclusive enclave for any length of time apart from Brophy and Robbins. And she’s across the Intracoastal Waterway in West Palm Beach.

Abitbol has lived with former New York Yankees pitcher turned commentator Dave Cone, 63, in a $2.5million five-bedroom home in a Boca Raton since 2021. It is 29 miles from Palm Beach’s iconic Worth Avenue shopping area.

She landed the role on the new show after a reported four failed attempts to be a cast member of Real Housewives of New York City, where they were previously living.

Musser has built a seven-bedroom, 11-bathroom waterfront mansion in West Palm Beach, which is currently on the market for $42.5million, and owns a five-bedroom West Palm Beach waterfront home valued at $14.4million (above), with partial views of Mar-a-Lago

Incredibly, she’s been involved in two lawsuits surrounding claims that she started a fire at the couple’s Manhattan apartment in 2019 in a bid to have an interesting backstory in her battle for the NY reality show slot.

Neighbor Daniel Rice claimed she tried to burn down her Manhattan apartment for the fame value – and caused water sprinklers to devastate his own home.

Abitbol counter-sued for defamation over statements Rice later made. But she lost her New York County Supreme Court case in 2024 at and was ordered to pay all her neighbor’s legal costs.

Judge Mary Rosado wrote in her decision: ‘There is ample evidence of Plaintiff (Abitbol) attempting to gain notoriety from the fire by talking about is on talk shows and publicizing the fire on her Instagram.’

She was ‘also featured in a New York Page Six article just three months prior to the fire as being named as someone who was ‘obsessed’ with getting on Real Housewife of New York and had apparently failed four auditions’.

Army vet Rice’s attorney wrote ‘Abitbol’s desire for fame and notoriety is well-known’ in his ongoing case against her.

The now reality cast member is reported as saying she lit a candle in the dining room of the four-bedroom apartment for her morning meditation, but it flared and sparked off the sprinkler system.

Meanwhile youngest Palm Beach cast member Ustayev lives in a five-bedroom house with homebuilder husband Roman Ovrutsky, also in Boca Raton.

They moved in 2022 from Bucks County, Pennsylvania and paid nearly $2million for the place, with a $1.37million mortgage. It is now valued around $3.4million.

Her ‘mentor’ in the show, Yellin, lives with husband Jonathan in a $6.5million five bedroom spread in Highland Beach. It is indeed magnificent, but it’s more than 20 miles from Worth Avenue and the president’s Mar-a-Lago compound.

Marginally closer to Palm Beach is Cozamanis, who lives with chiropractor husband Damon, 59, in a $4.3million four-bedroom home in Delray Beach. They bought it for $2.7million in 2020, with a mortgage of more than $2million.

Finally, Musser (motto: phony has a stench to it that no one likes) is described in the Netflix blurb as living in a $40million mansion.

Certainly, she has developed a seven-bedroom, 11-bathroom pile on the water in West Palm Beach which is on the market for $42.5million.

According to official Palm Beach County property records, she also owns a five-bedroom West Palm Beach waterfront property worth $14.2million that partly overlooks Mar-a-Lago.
