Oswego, Illinois news: 2 found dead after house explosion, large fire on Fox Chase Drive, fire officials say

In Oswego, Illinois, a tragic incident unfolded on Thursday evening when a house explosion led to a significant fire, leaving two individuals dead. Firefighters worked tirelessly to combat the blaze, which erupted after the explosion.

Authorities have pointed to a possible gas leak as the cause of the explosion, which not only engulfed the home in flames but also sent shockwaves through the nearby community.

By Friday morning, Oswego fire officials confirmed the unfortunate discovery of two deceased individuals at the scene.

Chopper 7 provided aerial views of the devastation that occurred around 5 p.m. in the 200-block of Fox Chase Drive. The house, across from Fox Chase Elementary School, was largely destroyed in the explosion.

Residents reported hearing a loud, thunderous noise just before their homes trembled. Shortly thereafter, they witnessed a massive cloud of smoke and flames rising into the sky.

Oswego Fire Chief Joshua Flanders described the aftermath, noting that only the front section of the garage remains of what was once a two-story home.

Multiple fire crews battling the flames in the frigid cold into the evening hours.

“We’re bringing in heavy equipment to pull pieces of the house apart so that we can finish extinguishing the fire,” Flanders said. “When we arrived, we found a two-story house that was fully involved in fire and large portions of it collapsed.”

Oswego’s fire chief says fire investigators from Oswego, neighboring communities, the state fire marshal’s office and ATF will be assisting in the investigation.

The chief said Nicor shut off the gas to the home.

While there was minor damage to the two neighboring homes, fire officials say there is no danger to other homes in the area.

No further information was available.
