Standoff in Beacon Lake ends with suspect's death; neighbor recounts tense SWAT operation

In a recent incident that gripped a tranquil St. Johns County neighborhood, authorities have identified Robert Spencer as the individual involved in a lengthy standoff on Sunday morning.

The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office reported that Spencer had barricaded himself inside a residence on Stargaze Lane in the Beacon Lake area. This situation led to a significant police presence, including the deployment of the SWAT team.

The sheriff’s office explained that deputies were dispatched to the home following a request from the Jacksonville Beach Police Department. This request was connected to a domestic violence case under their investigation.

Upon arrival, deputies faced resistance as Spencer refused to exit the house, choosing instead to barricade himself inside.

A neighbor’s cellphone footage captured dramatic scenes as SWAT officers used explosives to breach the home, successfully concluding the standoff after it had persisted for over an hour.

No foul play is suspected in Spencer’s death, as confirmed by the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office.

“I guess it took about an hour and a half before they were able to breach the doors and blew the doors off,” said Gillian Gold, who lives directly across the street from the home.

Gold said she has lived in the Beacon Lake neighborhood for about 30 days and was home with her two daughters when the situation unfolded.

“I was woke up to this so I honestly thought it was the fire department at the door because I heard banging and sirens,” Gold said. “I opened the door and the first thing I saw was their guns drawn, knocking on the door.”

Gold said deputies asked to use her home as a staging area during the operation and remained there for about two hours, including staging snipers inside one of her daughter’s bedrooms.

“They knocked on my door asking if they could use my house as a staging area for their snipers,” Gold said. “A few minutes later they came in, staged in my daughter’s bedroom.”

She said deputies kept her informed throughout the operation, including before loud bangs and explosives were used to breach the home.

According to the sheriff’s office, deputies forced entry into the house and found Spencer dead inside. Authorities said no foul play is suspected, and the official cause of death has not yet been released by the medical examiner.

Gold said she did not know Spencer personally and had only seen him in passing.

Despite the incident, Gold said she believes it was isolated and does not reflect the safety of the neighborhood.

“I think this was just a one-off situation,” she said. “I don’t think this is something that makes the neighborhood not a safe area.”

First Coast News reached out to the Jacksonville Beach Police Department for additional information regarding the domestic violence incident, but did not immediately receive a response.
