CHICAGO — The recent dismissal of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has been a long-standing demand among many Chicago residents over the past few months.

Protesters took to the streets throughout Chicago and Broadview, voicing their dissatisfaction with Noem’s management of federal immigration policies and calling for her removal from office.

“We see a recurring pattern of her actions, devoid of empathy, where arrests are made indiscriminately,” commented Baltazar Enriquez, President of the Little Village Community Council.

Enriquez hailed Thursday’s announcement by President Donald Trump, who revealed Noem’s successor, as a “victory for democracy.”

Noem had been a central figure in federal immigration operations within Chicago, which often saw federal agents in conflict with protesters both in Broadview and across the city.

Her tenure was marred by various lawsuits, as critics argued that her department repeatedly failed to demonstrate accountability.

“I think that’s the reason she got fired; she does whatever she wants,” Enriquez said. “There’s no accountability, no transparency with her agency and spending millions of dollars on stupidity that’s unnecessary.”

Noem faced increasing criticism in hearings on Capitol Hill this week during which members of Congress from both parties questioned her leadership in the wake of federal agents’ killing two U.S. citizens in Minnesota.

The attorney for Marimar Martinez, who survived being shot five times by federal agents in Chicago during “Operation Midway Blitz,” says her survival was instrumental to Noem’s ouster.

“Greg Bovino is gone; Trisha McLaughlin is gone. Now Kristi Noem is gone,” Chris Parentesaid. “By surviving she has been able to tell her story, and I think her story is compelling. I think it proves agents were lying. And it proves the actions these agents were taking in our cities is unacceptable.”

Trump said Noem will be moving to be special envoy for The Shield of the Americas in Florida.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker did not mince his words on her departure.

“Hey Kristi Noem, don’t let the door hit you on the way out,” Pritzker said in a social media video. “Here’s your legacy: corruption and chaos, parents and children tear gassed, moms and nurses, U.S. citizens getting shot in the face.”

“Letting her go as a secretary isn’t full justice. Justice is making sure this woman never again has any leadership position, oversees a budget or is any responsible for the safety of Americans,” said Rep. Delia Ramirez, a Democrat from Illinois.

Noem made a public appearance shortly after the announcement at the Major Cities Conference in Nashville.

However, she did not directly address her firing.

Instead, she spoke of the difficulties her department faced while working in sanctuary cities, like Chicago.

“Sanctuary cities do give U.S. a challenge because it makes it difficult at times for law enforcement to do their work,” Noem said. “We’ve seen many times when a city cooperates with our federal government, cooperates with our federal officers, that it is safer.”

President Trump thanked Noem for what he says was a successful run with the department. He has now appointed Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin as the next DHS secretary.

He would require Senate confirmation. Pennsylvania Democratic Sen. John Fetterman has said he will vote for Mullins.

Mayor Brandon Johnson said in a statement:

“In Kristi Noem’s time fleecing the American people with her derelict of leadership at DHS, Chicago has withstood targeted attacks by DHS and the federal agents under its purview who have incited chaos in our communities with their violence and callous disregard for our residents’ most basic human rights.

Instead of seeking collaboration, Noem weaponized fear to undermine trust between communities and local law enforcement who work every day to keep our communities safe.

Her tenure will be remembered by her brazen corruption, the reckless exploitation of vulnerable families to advance a far-right agenda, and willingness to put the President’s interests over those of the American People.

She will not be missed in Chicago.”
