OSLO — Authorities in Norway are delving into reports of a possible explosion that occurred near the U.S. Embassy in Oslo early Sunday morning, according to official statements.
Fortunately, no one was harmed in the incident. Oslo police noted in a news release that they received alerts about a “loud bang” or explosion around 1 a.m.
Reports from local media indicate that while there was some minor damage to an embassy entrance, those nearby observed a thick blanket of smoke enveloping the street after the explosion. Police are keen to speak with any witnesses as they continue to investigate suspects.
The Norwegian police security service, PST, has increased its presence in reaction to the event, though the national terror threat level remains unchanged, stated Martin Bernsen, a communications adviser.
“This is a highly unacceptable occurrence that is being handled with the utmost gravity,” commented Astri Aas-Hansen, Norway’s Minister of Justice and Public Security.
She further emphasized, “The police have assured that they are dedicating substantial resources to this investigation, and currently, there is no indication of any threat to public safety.”
The U.S. Embassy in Oslo referred media queries to the U.S. State Department, which did not immediately return a request for comment. Nor did Oslo police. Other details were not available.
