“We can confirm that on December 4, the U.S. issued a Note Verbale concerning the status of specific Iranian personnel at the United Nations,” the representative stated. “Due to privacy and security considerations, we refrain from discussing the details of diplomatic personnel actions.”

The official clarified, “This decision was made well in advance of the protests in Iran and is not connected to those events.”

According to a Friday report by Axios, Iran’s deputy ambassador, Saadat Aghajani, was instructed to leave in December, while two other members of the Iranian Mission to the UN were ordered to depart two months prior.

The removal of the Iranian deputy ambassador was executed under “section 13 procedures,” which permits expulsion on grounds of national security concerns or suspected espionage against the United States.

Aghajani’s children were also later forced to exit.

State Department reps did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Diplomats from Tehran have been limited in their movements outside the mission to within a 25 mile radius of the UN building in midtown Manhattan.
