Iconic northeastern grocery chain Pathmark opens new concept store in Nassau County

Pathmark, a beloved grocery store chain in the Northeast, is making a comeback on Long Island with an innovative concept for customers. After more than a decade since filing for bankruptcy, the chain is reintroducing itself with a fresh approach.

The new “Pathmark Daily” store will open its doors in East Meadow this Friday, bringing a modern and efficient shopping experience to Nassau County, as reported by Greater Long Island.

Following the acquisition of Pathmark by Allegiance Retail Services in 2016—after the parent company A&P declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2015—the revamped store will focus on delivering high-quality produce, meats, seafood, and essential items tailored for busy shoppers.

“Pathmark Daily caters to consumers seeking a quick and convenient shopping trip with an emphasis on value and quality,” said Joseph Fantozzi, President of Allegiance Retail Services, in a statement to Newsday.

The store will also feature the private label brand, Best Yet, and introduce a loyalty rewards program to enhance customer savings.

“Pathmark has always been synonymous with savings, and Pathmark Daily will uphold this legacy,” Fantozzi added. “By offering Best Yet products, weekly deals, and a rewarding loyalty program, we aim to serve the community’s needs effectively.”

The East Meadow location spans 28,000 square feet across two floors, with a 15,000-square-foot main shopping level and a basement for storage.

Pathmark Daily will be operated by Staten Island resident Mike Said, who opened a Super Foodtown location at the location in 2023, Newsday reported. Super Foodtown is also owned by Allegiance Retail Services.

Pathmark Daily will offer Nassau County shoppers a more streamlined grocery shopping experience. MMR

A&P acquired Pathmark in 2007 in a nearly $680 million deal that brought 141 locations across New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania under its umbrella, according to The New York Times.

The company, which was formed in 1859 as The Great American Tea Co. and rebranded to A&P in 1869, also owned Best Cellars, Food Basics, The Food Emporium, Superfresh and Waldbaums when it went out of business in 2015.

Allegiance Retail Services purchased the Pathmark banner following A&P’s bankruptcy in 2015 and brought the brand back to life in 2019, reopening the brand at a Brooklyn location that had previously housed one of the original Pathmark stores, according to a press release.

This marks the first expansion of the Pathmark brand under Allegiance Retail Services’ ownership.
