Health influencer and nurse killed in Bay Area robbery

A registered nurse who gained a large online audience by posting health guidance was fatally shot in what authorities say was an attempted robbery in downtown Oakland, leaving behind his young family and thousands of followers who knew him as “Nurse Solomon.”

Officials said 33-year-old Lartey Solomon was killed on May 31 as he walked toward his car near 14th and Harrison streets.

In connection with the shooting, prosecutors have charged 39-year-old Vallejo resident Shacory Carnell Daniels with murder.

The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office said Daniels is also facing counts of attempted robbery, personally and intentionally discharging a firearm, and possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon.

According to Oakland police, officers were dispatched just after 2:45 a.m. following reports of shots fired in the 1400 block of Harrison Street.

When police reached the scene, they discovered a man with gunshot injuries.

Solomon was rushed to a hospital, where he later died.

The killing sparked attention beyond the Bay Area because Solomon had established a social media presence as a health educator.

Through his TikTok account, he shared medical information with more than 20,000 followers.

According to an online fundraiser organized by his brother, Emmanuel Solomon, the nurse was born and raised in Ghana before relocating to the United States.

He attended Merritt College and later earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Samuel Merritt University.

The fundraiser said Solomon worked as a registered nurse at Alameda Health Care and Kindred Hospital in San Leandro.

“As a nurse, caring for others was more than a profession, it was his calling,” the family wrote. “He was passionate about educating people on their health and empowering them to make informed decisions about their well-being.”

Relatives told KTVU that Solomon and a friend had been leaving a nightclub and were heading toward their vehicles when a man approached and demanded a chain Solomon was wearing around his neck.

Solomon’s friend said he was walking toward his own car when he suddenly heard gunshots.

Daniels was arrested on June 4 in Menlo Park, prosecutors said.

He appeared Monday for arraignment at Wiley Manuel Courthouse in Oakland and remains jailed without bail.

Court records show Daniels has prior felony convictions in Alameda, Contra Costa and Orange counties, according to prosecutors.

His next court appearance is scheduled for June 30, when he is expected to enter a plea.
