A U.S. Marine is missing after disappearing from an amphibious Navy vessel off the coast of Southern California, prompting a large-scale search involving multiple agencies.
The U.S. Navy began search-and-recovery efforts after the Marine was reported missing shortly after 1 a.m. Thursday.
According to CBS8, the Marine had been assigned to the USS Anchorage while taking part in training with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit and the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group.
After nearly 43 hours of search-and-rescue operations, Navy officials transitioned the mission to a recovery effort at 9 p.m. Friday.
The search included personnel from the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Air Force. Officials said teams covered roughly 2,400 square miles with the help of three surface ships and 12 aircraft.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and all who are affected during this difficult time,” Deputy Public Affairs Officer Lt. Alissa Whyte said in a statement.
The Navy has not provided further information about what may have led to the Marine’s disappearance.
In accordance with Navy policy, the Marine’s name is being withheld until 24 hours after the next of kin have been notified.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
