Trump announces 'AI Force' and reveals names to replace 'artificial'

President Trump has declared his strong backing for artificial intelligence while unveiling plans for an “AI Force” to oversee the rapidly expanding technology. He also sought to dismiss criticism of AI’s environmental footprint, describing attacks on data centers as a “Democrat hoax.”

In a lengthy Saturday afternoon post on Truth Social, Trump compared worries about the electricity use and environmental impact of AI data centers with the broader political debate over climate change and several other divisive issues.

Trump said his administration would not restrict the industry’s development, promising instead to support and supervise what he called an extraordinary technological sector.

At the same time, he said officials would pursue harmful or illegal uses of AI through the existing criminal and civil justice systems.

The president also announced the creation of an “AI Force” and said he would select an “AI Czar” to help monitor the technology’s progress and potential risks.

In another post, Trump suggested that “artificial intelligence” could eventually be renamed “superior intelligence,” “extreme intelligence” or “supreme intelligence.” He described the field as a revolution that continues to accelerate.

Trump provided few specifics about the proposed AI Force, though he compared the initiative with the US Space Force.

The Space Force was established by Trump in 2019 as the sixth branch of the US military. It remains unclear whether the planned AI Force would similarly operate under the Department of Defense.

Toward the end of his message, Trump urged “high IQ” candidates to seek the czar role and portrayed artificial intelligence as the next Industrial Revolution.

“We are leading China, and the rest of the world, and I intend to keep it that way!” the president wrote.

Trump is expected to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping next week. US officials have previously indicated that artificial intelligence will be among the subjects discussed by the two leaders.

The United States and China both view AI as a key driver of economic power and are competing to secure a leading position in the industry.

Trump’s renewed focus on AI came one day after CNN reported that an AI-generated intelligence assessment had falsely identified materials aboard a Chinese ship in the Middle East.

According to multiple sources cited by the outlet, a US special operations analyst used an AI chatbot to examine the vessel’s manifest. The system’s analysis incorrectly claimed that the ship was carrying components linked to a nuclear weapons program.

Military planners reportedly moved quickly to prepare an interception. Soldiers were getting ready to board the ship, while aircraft had already taken to the air for the operation.

Just before the mission began, however, officials took another look at the assessment and discovered that AI had been used to produce it. A subsequent review found that the technology had misidentified the cargo.

One source described the assessment as “entirely false,” saying it had come close to triggering a military confrontation with China. Any action against the vessel, the source added, could have escalated into a conflict between the two global powers.

The US’s emphasis on developing AI has boosted the stock market through data center construction, but criticism of the industry has mounted.

Former employees with major AI companies have sounded the alarm on the technology’s dangers.

Jacob Coxon, a former researcher at Anthropic, outlined in a series of social media posts why he resigned, accusing his company and OpenAI of ‘racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives.’
