President Trump argued Friday that his record merits eight Nobel Peace Prizes, criticizing Norway after he was passed over for the award for a second consecutive year.
Speaking at a rally in Syracuse, New York, Trump questioned the identity of this year’s recipient. “Today they gave out the Nobel Peace Prize to a person—I’ve never heard of this person. Nobody has. It’s a mystery person,” he said.
He dismissed Navi Pillay, the honoree, describing her as “a liberal person who works at the United Nations.”
“I’ve never heard of this particular person, but congratulations anyway,” Trump said. He added that, in his view, the United Nations played no role in the conflicts he claimed to have resolved.
“They were of no help to me,” the president said.
Trump then turned his criticism toward the five-member Norwegian Nobel Committee, which selected Pillay for the prestigious peace award.

“The United States of America, represented by me as your president, should have received the Nobel Peace Prize, but didn’t,” he declared.
He called the decision a lasting blemish on Norway, saying it amounted to “an indelible stain on the country.”
Trump also labeled the committee’s choice “a disgraceful and embarrassing decision.”
He went on to accuse what he called “a handful of radical ideologues” of discrediting the Nobel Peace Prize, describing them as anti-democratic and “enemies of civilization.” Trump added, “We will not forget, Norway.”
Taking credit for ending “eight wars,” Trump said he believed each conflict should have earned a separate Nobel Peace Prize.
The president characterized the continued snub as further evidence that Norway and other countries were taking advantage of the United States.
