Canadian PM Carney says 4 service members killed, dozens injured in military base fire

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Sunday that four service members had died and dozens more suffered serious injuries after a fire broke out during a training exercise at a military base in Alberta. He described the incident as one of Canada’s most devastating peacetime military tragedies on home soil.

The fire began Saturday at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, where powerful winds drove the flames across the base and into nearby rural areas. Military officials said there was no evidence of terrorism, while investigators continued working to determine what caused the blaze.

In a televised address, Carney said the families of all four victims had been informed and cautioned that details of the disaster were still emerging.

The victims included reservists and members of Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, among the country’s oldest military regiments, according to the prime minister. Troops had arrived at Wainwright from military bases across Canada for the scheduled training operation.

Defense Minister David McGuinty confirmed earlier that there had been deaths and injuries but initially declined to release a figure, News Outlet previously reported.

“I cannot recall such an incident in my short time for sure as a minister, but I cannot recall an incident like this in recent memory,” McGuinty told reporters.

The full number of injured service members was still unknown Sunday. Patients were being treated at medical facilities in Wainwright, Edmonton, Red Deer and Calgary.

Hospitals throughout Alberta activated “Code Orange,” an emergency response used for mass-casualty events, as doctors, nurses and paramedics worked to care for the large number of wounded personnel.

“This number of patients would overwhelm the city of Edmonton,” Dr. Warren Thirsk, an emergency physician at Royal Alexandra Hospital, told CBC News. “It is more patients than any of us want to count right now. It’s a disaster.”

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said officers were called shortly after 4 p.m. Saturday after receiving reports of a fire in a training zone at the base. Fire crews confronted severe weather conditions, including wind gusts of up to 62 mph, as the blaze moved beyond the military property.

Officials said later Saturday that firefighters had contained the fire and protected nearby homes and essential infrastructure. Authorities did not issue an evacuation order for surrounding communities.

McGuinty said the RCMP was participating in the investigation, calling the response and inquiry “very, very active and delicate.”

Carney ordered flags on federal buildings across Canada to be lowered to half-staff in memory of those killed and injured. He also recognized the emergency crews who worked through the night to fight the flames.
