Most Offensive Celebrity Halloween Costumes Ever Revealed

Halloween remains the one night each year when celebrities can reinvent themselves as virtually anyone—or anything.

For many stars, October 31 offers the chance to turn ambitious fashion ideas into elaborate tributes to pop-culture figures, film characters and public personalities.

Yet not every costume earns applause. Some have prompted fierce criticism after crossing lines involving race, cultural identity, tragedy, abuse and child sexual exploitation.

Past controversies have included depictions of deceased celebrities, blackface and references to domestic violence and pedophilia. So which famous faces have worn some of Halloween’s most troubling costumes?

The list includes Bill Maher, who portrayed the late Steve Irwin with a fake stingray barb and blood on his chest, and Julianne Hough, who faced backlash after appearing in blackface as a character from Orange Is the New Black.

Here is a look at some of the celebrity Halloween costumes that sparked the strongest public backlash.

Chloë Sevigny portrayed a dead Princess Diana in 1999

Actress Chloë Sevigny caused controversy in 1999 by dressing as a dead version of Princess Diana.

Diana, one of the British Royal Family’s most popular figures, had died in a Paris car crash only two years earlier.

Sevigny’s costume appeared to reference the accident, with a cut painted on her chin, dark makeup around her eyes and a noticeably pale complexion.

The identity of her character was made unmistakable by the words ‘Die Di’ written across the lapel of her beige blazer.

Bill Maher appeared as the late Steve Irwin in 2006

Comedian and political commentator Bill Maher also drew criticism when he dressed as beloved wildlife presenter Steve Irwin just one month after Irwin died in a stingray attack in September 2006.

Maher recreated Irwin’s famous Crocodile Hunter persona, adding a fake stingray barb protruding from his chest.

He later defended the joke on his talk show, saying: ‘People who really love animals understand if you get killed by one, chances are you were doing something to it you shouldn’t have been.’

One of the most widely condemned celebrity costumes came from former Dancing With The Stars professional Julianne Hough, who dressed as Crazy Eyes, the character played by Uzo Aduba in Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black.

Her use of blackface prompted outrage. The racist practice, which dates back to 19th-century minstrel shows, turns Black people into caricatures and reinforces degrading stereotypes.

Hough later apologized on X, writing: ‘It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way.’

‘I realize my costume hurt and offended people and I truly apologize.’

‘When her husband was assassinated, she refused to change out of her blood-stained clothes, saying, “I want them to see what they’ve done.” The image of the delicate pink suit splattered with blood is one of the most haunting juxtapositions in modern history. Beauty and horror. Poise and devastation,’ she wrote.

Schitt’s Creek actress Emily Hampshire and a friend sparked backlash after dressing as Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, just one year after the former couple’s highly publicized defamation case. Heard had accused Depp of abuse, allegations he strongly denied.

Photos posted to Instagram showed Hampshire holding a bottle of wine while her friend portrayed Heard with a distressed expression.

Hampshire later deleted the post and apologized, writing: ‘I am deeply sorry and ashamed for putting something that awful out in the universe. Domestic abuse is never, ever funny.’

Depp lost the libel case he brought at the UK High Court in 2020 after being described as a ‘wife beater.’ In 2022, however, he won a separate US defamation case against Heard. The jury also found in Heard’s favor on one of her three counterclaims, ruling that Depp’s lawyer had defamed her in that instance.

The legal battle severely damaged Depp’s public standing, with allegations involving domestic abuse, sexual violence, drug use and heavy drinking dominating headlines about the actor.
