Dashcam vision from inside a car showed the moment it crashed after speeding through Sydney’s multi-million-dollar suburbs.
Officers tried to stop an allegedly speeding Toyota Yaris on Hopetoun Avenue in Vaucluse about 11.20pm on Sunday.
The driver failed to stop, sparking a chase which was soon terminated due to safety concerns.
The car allegedly sped the wrong way down a one-way lane and a bend before crashing through a fence on Hopetoun Avenue in Watsons Bay.
Officers were not far behind.
The alleged driver, an 18-year-old man, and three other teenagers emerged from the car.
“We heard a really big crash,” neighbour Lloyd told 9News on Tuesday.
“Then we heard a loud, aggressive cop going ‘get out of the car’.”
The driver was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital as a precaution, while the three other teenagers were uninjured.
The 18-year-old was taken to Waverley Police Station, where he was charged with exceeding speed over 20km/h, driving a motor vehicle while license suspended, and police pursuit driving recklessly.
He was granted conditional bail and will face the Downing Centre Local Court next month.
At the time of the chase, police claimed they terminated their pursuit for safety reasons the vision obtained by 9News has challenged that view.
A marked squad car and two officers were there with lights on at the time of the crash.
Police have told 9News that no breaches have been identified, and that the termination of the pursuit and the crash happened almost simultaneously.
But in light of this new footage, a further review will be conducted.
