Homeless Man With 37 Prior Convictions Arrested in Attack Outside Alachua Library

Staff report

ALACHUA, Fla. – A 63-year-old man, identified by police as Robert Lee Robinson, was arrested after authorities say he attacked another man outside the Alachua library in the early morning hours of July 21.

According to an Alachua Police Department report, an officer was called to the Alachua Sports Pub at about 2:35 a.m. The victim told police he had found a bag near the Alachua library that he thought had been abandoned. As he was looking through the contents, he said Robinson suddenly assaulted him.

The man reported that he was struck and choked while on the ground before managing to get away and run to the Alachua Sports Pub for assistance. The responding officer wrote that the victim had visible injuries across his upper body, including injuries to his face.

Police later spoke with Robinson at the library. The officer reported that Robinson was initially uncooperative, saying he was ready to leave and wanted to speak with a judge. After being read his Miranda rights, Robinson reportedly said he woke up and found the victim going through his bag. He told police that after he confronted the man, the two began fighting. When asked to describe what happened during the altercation, Robinson reportedly stopped cooperating again and said he would talk to the judge.

The victim later positively identified Robinson as the person who attacked him, according to the report.

Robinson, who is listed as homeless in the arrest report, has been charged with felony battery with a prior battery conviction. Court and arrest records note that he has nine felony convictions, including one violent conviction, and 28 misdemeanor convictions, three of them violent. He has also served six state prison sentences, with his most recent release in 2004. Judge Susan Miller-Jones set his bail at $50,000.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
