Champaign Co. building fire caused by 'active burn pile' and 'windy conditions'

DEWEY, Ill. (WCIA) — On Saturday, the Sangamon Valley Fire Protection District was called to a structure in Champaign County that was completely on fire.

The fire occurred in a storage building near 2800N and 900E in Dewey at around 7:30 p.m. Upon arrival, crews found the building unoccupied but engulfed in flames.

Crews used defensive tactics and promptly put out the fire. Following an investigation, it was concluded that the fire started accidentally due to an active burn pile combined with windy conditions.

The Sangamon Valley Fire Protection District thanked the Cornbelt Fire Protection District, Rantoul Fire Department, Thomasboro Fire Protection District, Carle Arrow Ambulances, and the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance.
