Dog owner arrested after pets allegedly maul Brisbane runner

The owner of two dogs accused of seriously attacking a man in Brisbane’s north was arrested for an “unrelated matter” just moments after speaking publicly about the animals.

The alleged attack occurred about 6.15pm on Friday, when a 37-year-old man was running near Seventh Brigade Park on Kittyhawk Drive, Chermside.

Paramedics found the runner suffering life-threatening injuries to his face, arms and legs. He was taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, where his condition later stabilised.

Both dogs were eventually captured and placed in the care of Brisbane City Council. Council officials said the animals were registered to the same address and had never previously been classified as dangerous.

The dogs’ owner, Layla Evans, spoke with Nine on Saturday as authorities searched for her pets, Louis and Ruby.

Only minutes after the interview aired, police were seen arriving and arresting Ms Evans.

As she was escorted in handcuffs towards a police van, Ms Evans could be heard shouting, “stop pulling my arms apart”, while bystanders called out to officers.

Queensland Police told Our News Outlet that the arrest related to an “unrelated matter”.

Ms Evans said the dogs had been left in a tent but had escaped while she was out at dinner with a friend

Ms Evans said the dogs escaped from a tent while she was out having dinner with a friend.

According to Nine, the first dog was found in the front yard of a property at about 8pm on Friday.

The second animal was reportedly discovered asleep on the back deck of another property at 8am on Saturday after a member of the public provided a tip.

After the dogs were located, Queensland Police told Our News Outlet that officers faced an “immediate and serious safety risk”.

Police said initial efforts to restrain the animals failed, leaving officers “required to discharge their service firearms in response to the risk posed to members of the community and others at the scene”.

“As with all police use of force incidents, the matter has been recorded and reviewed by senior officers in accordance with Queensland Police Service policy and procedures.”

Brisbane City Council told the Courier Mail that destruction orders would be issued for both dogs.

The dogs were identified as a bulldog-American Staffordshire terrier cross and a bulldog-boxer cross.

Before her arrest, Ms Evans said the dogs were protective of her, but maintained they had never shown aggressive behaviour in the past.

Upon locating the pets, Queensland Police told Our News Outlet attending officers had been confronted with an 'immediate and serious safety risk'

Queensland Police said officers faced an “immediate and serious safety risk” when the dogs were located.

‘They’ll bark if you proceed to come in, (if) they feel like harm’s gonna be done to me or my partner then they will proceed to protect, but, apart from that, they’re really good dogs,’ she said.

Ms Evans said the dogs had been left in a tent but had escaped while she was out at dinner with a friend.

‘The police told me, finally, that apparently they had got through the roof of the tent and then tore a hole, and that’s how that big hole ended up there,’ she said.

‘And from there had proceeded to protect the campsite, I guess.

‘My mother rung me to say she was with the police… and I had to come down, had to come down and try to find my dog.’

On the search for her pets, Evans said: ‘I walked all over town, I walked over the park, couldn’t find them anywhere.’

‘Shattered, I’m shattered to bits.’

Nine reported Evans had not been charged following the incident, but remained in police custody on Saturday.
