Katie Zacharia fired after Trump advisor interrupted interview

Katie Zacharia’s first week as White House press secretary ended almost as quickly as it began, as new details emerge about the dramatic circumstances surrounding her departure.

She made her debut in the White House briefing room on Tuesday morning, delivering heavily prepared remarks before appearing to struggle under questioning and limiting reporters to just three questions.

By Friday, after only five days in the high-profile position, Zacharia had been removed. Earlier that day, she was speaking with a reporter from the Wall Street Journal from her recently assigned West Wing office.

The conversation was interrupted when Jason Miller, a senior adviser to President Donald Trump, approached and tapped Zacharia on the shoulder. “JD wanted to chat with us real quick,” he reportedly told her.

Zacharia stepped away from the interview and did not return, according to the Wall Street Journal. Shortly afterward, Trump answered questions from reporters near his helicopter before leaving for Joint Base Andrews.

Asked how he viewed Zacharia’s performance, Trump said: “Well, Katie’s been treated very badly by the media.”

The president also described a conversation they had earlier that day, saying he had encouraged her to think carefully about whether she wanted to remain in the demanding role.

“I said, ‘Is this for you, Katie? Because honestly, you don’t need this,’” Trump told reporters.

President Donald Trump told reporters on Friday that he suggested Zacharia 'reconsider' her role following a rocky first week

President Donald Trump said Friday that he had advised Zacharia to “reconsider” the position after a difficult opening week.

When asked whether he still had confidence in her, Trump replied: “I don’t know. We’ll see. I’m gonna let her make that decision.”

He said he warned her that she might want to step away because of the intense criticism, accusing the media of treating her “nasty” since her first appearance in the briefing room.

Before reports of her removal surfaced, Zacharia told the Wall Street Journal that there were “no staffing changes that are happening.”

She said she was focused on keeping the White House communications operation “cohesive” and spoke confidently about her close working relationship with the president.

At the same time, Zacharia acknowledged the physical toll of the job, saying she was operating on “no sleep and high adrenaline and probably too much caffeine and no food.”

Her brief tenure as press secretary became a rapid and highly publicized setback. The approximately 14-minute briefing drew widespread ridicule online, while commentators on Fox News also questioned how she handled the appearance.

Zacharia had been an unexpected choice for the position. Her background included six weeks at the Department of Homeland Security, appearances on conservative media and a legal career that had attracted scrutiny.

She had only about 24 hours to prepare for her first briefing. Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Zacharia said, “The truth is that I have a hard time saying ‘no’ because I want to be a team player,” while making clear that she was not accusing the White House of forcing her to move too quickly.

A former Trump official described Zacharia as an ‘overwhelmed substitute teacher,’ the Wall Street Journal reported.

Members of the White House communications team told the outlet that she arrived late to a meeting on Friday and stood in the back of the room.

When invited to address her team, she said she was excited to work at the White House and eager to get to know everyone.
