In a tragic incident that has shaken a peaceful residential neighborhood in Tarzana, Los Angeles, authorities have identified both the victim and the suspect involved in a fatal stabbing that occurred earlier this week. The Los Angeles Police Department revealed unsettling details surrounding the 911 call that led officers to the scene.
The victim, 81-year-old James Handy, was an actor with notable roles in films such as “Jumanji,” “Top Gun: Maverick,” and “Arachnophobia,” according to reports from KABC-TV, a sister station. Handy’s contributions to the entertainment industry were well recognized, adding an additional layer of sorrow to this devastating event.
Police were summoned to the 19200 block of Erwin Street, just three blocks from Victory Boulevard, following a call about “unknown trouble” at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday. The LAPD shared that the 911 call included the chilling statement, “I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin,” which intensified the urgency of the situation.
Upon arrival, officers discovered Handy in a critical state in the front yard of a residence, suffering from a stab wound to his chest. Despite the efforts of Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics, Handy was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
The suspect, who approached the officers at the scene, openly admitted his involvement, according to the police. He resides at the location with his mother, who is reportedly Handy’s girlfriend, adding a tragic domestic dimension to the crime. This incident has left the community in shock, highlighting yet again the unpredictable nature of violence in familial settings.
“The suspect flagged down nearby responding officers, telling them he was the one they were looking for,” the police statement said. “The suspect resides at the location with his mother, who is the victim’s girlfriend.”
The suspect was identified as 44-year-old Michael Gledhill, a resident of Tarzana, the LAPD said. He was arrested and booked for one count of murder, and his bail was set at $2,000,000.00.
