Disgraced attorney Alex Murdaugh has initiated legal action, claiming his civil rights were breached when a court clerk allegedly influenced the jury during his trial. This follows the overturning of his double-murder conviction.
The lawsuit, stretching across 17 pages, was submitted to a federal court in Columbia, South Carolina, early Monday.
Murdaugh’s legal complaint asserts, “At the time of the trial, neither Mr. Murdaugh nor his legal team was aware that Ms. Rebecca ‘Becky’ Hill—Colleton County’s elected Clerk of Court and the primary overseer of the jury—had covertly and intentionally meddled in the jury’s decision-making process for her personal financial benefit.”

The South Carolina Supreme Court has accused Becky Hill of engaging in “shocking jury interference” during the trial where Murdaugh faced charges for the murders of his wife and son.
Just last week, the South Carolina Supreme Court detailed how Hill’s actions during Murdaugh’s 2023 double-murder trial breached both ethical standards and constitutional rights, leading to the collapse of the conviction.
“Both the prosecution and the defense presented their arguments effectively as the trial court adeptly managed this complex and high-profile case,” the court remarked. “Nevertheless, their efforts were thwarted when Colleton County Clerk of Court Rebecca Hill manipulated the justice system, thus depriving Murdaugh of a fair trial by an unbiased jury.”
