MIAMI — An Amazon cargo aircraft ran off a runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday, hitting several vehicles and catching fire in a dramatic crash that sent heavy black smoke rising above one of the country’s busiest airports and prompted officials to shut down all runways.
More than 60 Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units were dispatched to the scene. Crews arrived to find the plane burning as firefighters moved to knock down the flames and emergency personnel evaluated patients. Authorities had not released details on possible injuries or fatalities.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the aircraft overran the runway at about 2 p.m. after a flight from San Juan, Puerto Rico. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said the plane struck multiple vehicles after it left the runway area.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said FAA investigators were being sent to Miami, and a full ground stop was ordered at Miami International while emergency crews responded.
Images from the scene showed the Prime Air jet stopped near a roadway beside two semi-trucks. Despite the fire, the aircraft appeared mostly intact and seemed to be resting on its belly.
An airport spokesperson said all runways and taxiways were closed. By late Sunday afternoon, roughly 250 flights at Miami International were delayed, according to FlightAware, which monitors flight disruptions.
The FAA cautioned that delays could continue even after operations resumed, with arrivals and departures expected to restart at a reduced pace.
The National Transportation Safety Board said it was collecting information about the crash.
“We’re working closely with local authorities and officials to understand exactly what happened,” Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel said in a social media post. “Right now, our absolute priority is the safety, well-being, and care of everyone involved.”
