Bronx miracle tot falls 5 floors — but is carried away alert and conscious

A 1-year-old boy survived a terrifying fall from a fifth-floor window in the Bronx on Friday evening and was later listed in stable condition at a hospital, police said.

Authorities said the toddler fell from a window at 593 Oak Terrace in Mott Haven around 6:40 p.m., landing face down behind the six-story apartment building.

When FDNY first responders reached the scene, the baby was alert and conscious, officials said.

“It wasn’t moving, only crying. Its legs were crossed. No socks. No shoes. Only pampers,” recalled first-floor resident Wilma Roman.

The child was transported to Harlem Hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition.

The NYPD said one person of interest was taken into custody after the incident.

The Post photographed a man in handcuffs as he was led away from the Bronx apartment building.

Several other young children were also seen being escorted into a police cruiser at the scene.

Another resident of the building, Emmanual, said he was watching TV in his third-floor apartment when he “saw a shadow pass the window.”

Then he heard a “loud bang.”

“I thought it was garbage at first because people throw garbage out the window. But when I looked I noticed it was a baby, face down on the floor.”

Another witness described seeing a little boy on a stretcher, “Face down with a bandage covering his face.”

“This is heartbreaking for me,” said the witness, a mother of three.

She said others who were able to get into the backyard where the boy had fallen said there was “a lot of blood” and that the child “was not responsive to the care that was given to him.”

Several witnesses told The Post that the boy’s parents were nowhere in sight after he fell.

While first responders were tending to the tot, the woman said she saw an older man “pacing” near the scene – but he didn’t appear to be the baby’s father.

“I did see an older man pacing back and forth almost as if he was the one that witnessed what happened, or heard something,” she told The Post.

The woman praised first responders for how they handled the situation.

She said a young firefighter climbed into the building through a window and “opened the gate for authorities to be able to answer.”

“It was pretty calm. Everyone did really well, you know, under the circumstances, not knowing what — what was really going on,” she said.
