Brother shot sister on front steps of NJ home before turning gun on himself

A deadly shooting outside a southern New Jersey home ended in a suspected murder-suicide Wednesday morning, authorities said.

Daniel Lopez, 60, allegedly shot his sister, Janet Camacho, leaving her critically wounded on the front steps of a home in Pennsauken before fatally shooting himself, according to the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office.

Officers responded to the Bethel Avenue residence shortly after 9 a.m. following reports of gunfire and a man carrying a handgun.

Camacho was found on the home’s front stoop when police arrived. She was taken to Cooper University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead a short time later, officials said.

Authorities secured the area and established a perimeter around the property. Neighbors were reportedly escorted from nearby homes as police investigated the scene, WPVI reported.

About 90 minutes after the initial emergency call, police used a robotic dog to search the home and found Lopez dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Investigators classified the case as a murder-suicide, though officials have not disclosed a possible motive and the investigation remains ongoing.

WPVI obtained surveillance video that reportedly captures the shooting followed by a man pacing outside the residence. The station said the footage was too graphic to broadcast.

Michelle Jimenez, a neighbor, said Lopez had been a longtime friend of her family.

“We used to invite him a lot for family parties. He would always be our guest. He was really close to our family. He was always nice. He would bake stuff for me and my siblings,” Jimenez told WPVI.

“It was just shocking to me. I didn’t believe it,” Jimenez said.
