A dream vacation at Disney World in Florida took an unexpected turn when a monorail packed with passengers became stranded after a lightning strike damaged the system.
Severe storms swept through the Disney World area over the weekend, leaving passengers stuck aboard a monorail after lightning knocked out its electrical system, according to those on board.
The dangerous weather disrupted visitors’ plans and left them trapped inside the train for about an hour and a half, passengers said.
The incident occurred as Florida endured a weekend of heavy rain and thunderstorms, with additional wet weather forecast throughout the week.
As they waited for help, passengers tried to open the monorail’s windows. The hot, humid conditions grew increasingly uncomfortable during what many described as a frustrating and frightening ordeal.
“We were there for one and a half hours and during that time, the driver talked us through how to take out the window,” Tanya Lee told Storyful News.
Power was eventually restored, and authorities towed the monorail to the nearest station, allowing passengers to leave safely.
“Everyone was in good spirits, as there is not much you can do at that point,” Lee said.
Storyful News reported that Disney guest relations offered the affected passengers $50 gift cards, along with a Lightning Lane pass allowing them to bypass long lines.
FOX Weather contacted Disney World for additional information but has not received a response.
