DSA Leader Says Group Supports Abolishing Prisons and Borders in TV Interview

DSA leader says the quiet part out loud

A senior figure in the Democratic Socialists of America openly acknowledged that the left-wing organization backs sweeping proposals to eliminate prisons, borders, the Senate and other major institutions during an unusually blunt television appearance.

Megan Romer, the DSA’s national co-chair, spelled out the group’s ambitious and controversial agenda Sunday while answering a rapid-fire series of “true or false” questions on Fox News.

“Just give me a true-or-false on these. Abolish the Senate,” Fox host Shannon Bream asked. Romer’s response was direct: “True.”

Romer went on to answer yes to several other progressive priorities, including “abolish ICE,” “defund the Pentagon,” and placing large corporations under government ownership.

She also said the Democratic Socialists of America supports abolishing borders, granting amnesty to illegal immigrants and ending prisons “as part of a long-term program.”

The DSA’s most prominent political ally, Mayor Zohran Mamdani, has promoted a New York City agenda that includes city-owned grocery stores, expanded stabilized housing and higher taxes on wealthy residents. At the same time, he has tried to separate his own platform from some of the national organization’s more radical positions, saying last year, “My platform is not the same as national DSA.”

Even so, Mamdani has described himself as a card-carrying socialist, including after he split with the far-left group over its endorsements in several Democratic congressional primaries.

“It continues to be my political home, I continue to be a proud member,” Mamdani insisted.

The TV interview from the DSA leader comes shortly after the group put out a new “Workers Deserve More” manifesto that called to scrap the executive branch, the Senate and Electoral College with the aim of ending the two-party system.

The move to tear up the US Constitution to emulate a European style parliamentary system where the US House of Representatives would appoint a prime minister-like leader and also choose members of the Supreme Court.

The declaration, which also called for ranked-choice voting in all elections, concluded that Congress is more democratic than the Senate because the upper chamber has two senators for each state regardless of population.
