Germany is moving to expand its military role within NATO, with Berlin’s ambassador to Washington telling News Agency that the country is prepared to take on a larger share of Europe’s security after years in which the United States shouldered much of the alliance’s defense load.
“Germany is stepping up — we heard the call!” German Ambassador to the United States Jens Hanefeld said in an exclusive interview with News Agency.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz has declared that Germany’s military should grow into the most capable conventional force in Europe, a target Hanefeld said is now reflected in Berlin’s updated defense strategy.
