Lindsay Clancy’s Family Raised Mental Health Alarms Months Before Children’s Deaths

If you or someone you know is experiencing suicidal thoughts, contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

Relatives of Lindsay Clancy were “very concerned” about her mental health in the months leading up to the deaths of her three children, according to testimony presented in court.

Clancy, 36, faces three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of her children — Cora, Dawson and Callan — all of whom were younger than 6 when they were found strangled inside the family’s Duxbury, Massachusetts, home in 2023. Prosecutors rested their case Monday morning.

The jury hearing the Lindsay Clancy murder trial is made up of 12 women and six men, with six of the jurors serving as alternates.

On Tuesday, Susan Clancy, Lindsay’s mother-in-law, testified that she had concerns about Clancy’s mental health during the 2022 holiday season. At the same time, she described Lindsay as a loving and attentive mother.

Clancy has not disputed that she killed the children. Her defense team argues she was suffering from ongoing postpartum psychosis when the deaths occurred.

She has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

“Lindsay was struggling. We were all very concerned,” Susan Clancy said. “She was very nurturing, very loving. She was a wonderful mother. Wonderful.”

Susan Clancy said she began seeing a decline in Lindsay’s mental health in November 2022.

“She reached out to me in November and told me that she felt unwell,” Susan Clancy said. “She felt…Mostly she had insomnia. She was losing her appetite. She was, very anxious and sad.”

“She was begging for help,” Susan Clancy said.

When asked if she ever saw Lindsay Clancy treat the children bad, her mother-in-law responded, “no.”

Paula Musgrove, Lindsay Clancy’s mother, also told jurors about the mental health problems. In an Oct. 20, 2022 text message, Lindsay Clancy asked her mother for help.

“Mom, will you please come up and stay with me for a bit? I’m really sick. Something is wrong. I had horrible insomnia all night, and I just don’t know how I am going to get through the day…It’s just really scary, and I don’t want to be alone,” the text read.

Musgrove said she wasn’t concerned about the children’s safety.
