Officials warn of measles exposure at Chicago's Union Station; traveler arrived from Missouri was headed to Rochester, NY

CHICAGO () — Chicago public health officials are looking into a possible measles exposure tied to an out-of-state train passenger who spent nearly a full day in the city.

The Chicago investigation comes as health authorities in Kane County examine a separate measles case this summer involving someone who had already been vaccinated.

According to the Chicago Department of Public Health, the traveler came from Sedalia, Missouri, and arrived at Union Station around 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 27. The person stayed overnight in Chicago, then returned to Union Station at about 9 p.m. on Aug. 28 before continuing on to Rochester, New York.

City health officials said they are working to notify anyone who may have been exposed. Because measles symptoms can take time to appear, officials cautioned that illness may develop as long as three weeks after exposure.

Dr. Alfredo Mena Lora, an infectious disease specialist at St. Anthony Hospital, said anyone who believes they may have been near the infected traveler should watch closely for signs of measles.

“Generally, symptoms can show up within a week or two, though the outer limit is about three weeks,” Dr. Mena Lora said, noting that people may develop a cough, fever and rash.
