WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur of Ohio is receiving medical care for injuries that are not considered life-threatening after a vehicle crash Sunday morning in Toledo, according to a statement from her office.
Kaptur, 80, was riding as a passenger on her way to a church service when the vehicle she was in was hit, her office said. The statement described the Democratic congresswoman as “active” and “alert,” adding that she “looks forward to returning to a full schedule soon.”
Because the U.S. House of Representatives is currently away from Washington for its summer recess, Kaptur had not been scheduled to be at the Capitol this week.
Kaptur, who holds the distinction of being the longest-serving woman in House history, is again facing former state Rep. Derek Merrin in a high-profile rematch for her northwest Ohio congressional seat. In 2024, she narrowly held on to the district by a margin just above the 0.5% threshold that would have required an automatic recount, while a Libertarian candidate drew roughly 4% of the vote.

Her office said Toledo police and fire personnel responded quickly after the crash, with “medical professionals helping to take care of those involved in the crash.” The statement added that Kaptur’s team awaits further details from Toledo Police as the department continues its investigation.
The Toledo Police Department’s traffic division did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Associated Press.
