Pentagon UFO files release: Amid new UFO disclosure, officials say public can draw conclusions on unidentified anomalous phenomena

In an unprecedented move, the Pentagon has begun releasing new files on UFOs, inviting the public to examine and form their own opinions on these “unidentified anomalous phenomena.” This initiative is not solely the Pentagon’s endeavor but is also supported by a coalition involving the White House, the director of national intelligence, the Energy Department, NASA, and the FBI.

On Friday, the Pentagon announced via a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, that unlike previous administrations, President Donald Trump is committed to “maximum transparency.” The message emphasized that it is up to the public to interpret the information these files contain. The Pentagon has committed to releasing additional documents continually over time.

President Trump, who has been hinting at this disclosure since February, has a history of releasing documents, including those related to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr., although these provided little new information. His administration’s focus, however, remains on ensuring the public has the opportunity to access and analyze these UFO files.

Efforts to declassify information about UFOs are not new for the Pentagon, which has been working on this task for several years. In 2022, Congress established an office dedicated to declassifying such material. A report published in 2024 by this office unveiled hundreds of new incidents involving unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs) but did not confirm any instances of alien technology being sighted by the U.S. government.

The push for transparency gained momentum in 2022 when Congress mandated the Pentagon to release decades of UFO sighting files. This was partly inspired by accounts from military personnel who reported encounters with unexplained aircraft. These ongoing disclosures reflect a significant shift toward openness regarding phenomena long shrouded in mystery and speculation.

Congress ordered the Pentagon to begin releasing decades of files on UFO sightings in 2022 as some members of the military shared encounters with unexplained aircraft.

A small group of Republicans in Congress has pressed for further transparency, accusing the Pentagon of holding documents back. A March letter from Rep. Anna Paulina Luna demanded 46 UAP videos identified by whistleblowers. On social media on Friday, Luna said those videos are expected to be released in a later Pentagon release.

Rep. Tim Burchett thanked Trump for “keeping his word” on transparency and disclosure.”

“I would like to remind people that transparency won’t all happen at once, it will take some time,” Burchett said in a statement.

Experts have urged caution around the release of the new files, warning that UAP videos are often misinterpreted and mischaracterized by those unfamiliar with advanced military technology. The Pentagon’s 2024 report rebutted claims that the U.S. government has recovered alien technology or confirmed evidence of alien life.
