Student perpetrates deadly shooting at Thailand high school, authorities say

A student opened fire at a high school in Thailand on Friday, leaving at least six people dead and several others wounded, according to police.

The shooting unfolded at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Nonthaburi province, northwest of Bangkok, Royal Thai Police spokesperson Trairong Piwpan told The Associated Press.

One witness told reporters that students took shelter inside a classroom after hearing gunfire coming from another building. Police later knocked on the door and escorted them out to safety, the witness said.

Officials released differing casualty figures in the immediate aftermath of the school shooting.

Trairong told Channel 3 that the suspected attacker was hospitalized in serious condition. He also said 15 others were injured, including two people in critical condition, and reported that three teachers and three students had been killed.

Thailand’s Health Minister Pattana Promphat gave a different assessment, saying 22 people were injured, nine of them critically. Some injuries were reportedly caused by incidents such as falls, and authorities had not clarified how many victims had been shot.

Deputy Interior Minister Polapee Suwunchwee indicated to reporters that five teachers passed away and that the perpetrator took the lives of his two grandparents at home prior to heading to the school. He reported that the attacker died at a hospital.
