President Trump met with French President Emmanuel Macron in New York on Monday, holding talks on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
The leaders discussed the conflicts involving Iran and Ukraine during their meeting at Trump Tower in Midtown Manhattan, Macron said.
“We decided to act together to ease tensions in the energy markets, by protecting critical infrastructure in the Middle East and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz,” Macron wrote on X.
“We will also pool our efforts to secure a moratorium on strikes against energy infrastructure and against Ukrainian civilian infrastructure,” he added. “Civilian populations must be protected, and we must initiate as soon as possible a serious negotiation on the conditions for peace between Russia and Ukraine.”
Macron also posted a photograph of the meeting, including a handshake with Trump. The two leaders have shared a long-running history of notably intense, tug-of-war-style handshakes dating to Trump’s first term.
Speaking to reporters afterward, Macron described his conversation with Trump as “very good” and “very constructive,” according to Reuters.
“We had a lengthy discussion on Ukraine and Russia, the need to help our Ukrainian friends more quickly and more strongly in terms of interceptors, because that is the key issue from a defensive point of view,” Macron said.
Trump and Macron are both scheduled to address world leaders and diplomats at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.
Trump’s meeting with Macron came only hours after the president met with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani at Gracie Mansion.
According to Axios, Trump is also set to meet with Gulf Arab leaders on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on Wednesday.
The White House did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.
