Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized on Wednesday at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) that it is alliances and defensive measures, rather than international laws, that can truly safeguard against conflicts and authoritarian pursuits.
The Ukrainian leader urged the global community to enhance efforts against Russian President Vladimir Putin amidst an extended conflict surpassing three and a half years. He cautioned that while Ukraine might have been the initial European nation to face Moscow’s challenge to international norms, it won’t be the last.
“Putin is persisting in his efforts to expand the war, both in reach and in impact. As we’ve previously stated, Ukraine is only the beginning. Currently, Russian drones are already traversing across Europe,” Zelenskyy said. “Russian activities are progressively extending to different countries, and Putin is intent on broadening the conflict.
“Firefighters were working on-site in Kyiv, Ukraine, following a Russian attack early Thursday, August 28, 2025,” the caption reads.
But it wasn’t only the international community’s failure to stop Putin that Zelenskyy addressed.
He pointed to the Israeli hostages who are still held in Gaza and the horrific conditions Palestinians live in.
“There is no longer any effective platform for nations to express their grievances from forums like this,” Zelenskyy commented. “Not even during aggressive outbreaks. There’s no international body capable of halting such events. This is how debilitated these institutions are now.
“What can regions like Sudan, Somalia, Palestine, or any other populations experiencing war realistically anticipate from the UN or the global system? Just more statements,” he observed.

“In the end, peace depends on all of us, on the United Nations,” Zelenskyy said. “So don’t stay silent while Russia keeps dragging this war on. Please speak out and condemn it.
“Please join us in defending life and international law and order,” he added. “People are waiting for action.”
