British PM Keir Starmer could face leadership challenge amid internal troubles
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing mounting pressure from within Labour after Andy Burnham’s special election victory, a development some believe could open the door to a leadership challenge. Starmer has come under criticism over economic strains, illegal immigration concerns and renewed controversy tied to his former role in prosecuting grooming gang cases. Elon Musk has also accused him of complicity.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is said to be weighing whether to resign and may set out a possible departure timeline as soon as Monday, according to a report released Saturday.
Britain’s Observer newspaper reported that Starmer was speaking with his wife about his political future while at Chequers, the prime minister’s official country residence, before reaching a final decision.
The publication said senior Labour figures are anticipating a statement on his future potentially arriving early next week.
A government source told Reuters that Starmer remains concentrated on running the country and referred to his earlier remarks pledging to stay in office.

News Agency has contacted the prime minister’s office seeking comment.
Scrutiny of Starmer has intensified over recent months as frustration grows inside Labour and questions persist about the government’s response to the economy and cost-of-living pressures.
The political threat to Starmer intensified Friday after rival Andy Burnham won a seat in Parliament, positioning him to mount a formal leadership challenge.

Starmer congratulated Burnham following the victory, writing on X that voters, “chose Labour’s campaign of hope and optimism over division and hate.”
When asked about Burnham’s apparent ambitions to replace him, Starmer insisted he intends to remain in office.
“I’ve said repeatedly I’m not going to walk away from that,” Starmer said.

Starmer has led the Labour Party since 2020 and became prime minister in 2024.
Calls for his resignation intensified last month, with more than 100 Labour lawmakers publicly urging him to step aside or set out a timetable for his departure. Several parliamentary aides also resigned in protest.
The internal revolt followed a series of disappointing local election results for Labour, which lost hundreds of council seats across England, surrendered long-held ground in Wales and fell behind political rivals in Scotland.

Starmer’s popularity has also declined amid a persistently high cost of living, sluggish economic growth and criticism over his acceptance of gifts from wealthy donors.
