Fidel, future dictators' socialist denials went up in smoke

Throughout modern history, numerous future communist dictators distanced themselves from socialist and communist labels—at least until they had secured power.

As politicians, revolutionaries, and military officers, they understood that openly embracing those ideologies could create international backlash and complicate their efforts to govern at home.

The list includes Cuba’s Fidel Castro, who famously traveled to New York City after overthrowing the Batista regime in 1959 and even visited Yankee Stadium.

Castro described his movement as “a humanistic” revolution and insisted, “I have said very clearly that we are not Communists.” He ultimately established a communist state and maintained an iron grip on power for 67 years and counting.

Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez, a former Army officer, adopted a similar “humanist” description before declaring a socialist revolution and mounting an increasingly hostile campaign against the United States. His successor, Nicolas Maduro, who faces narco-terrorism charges, is now held by the US after being captured in a January raid.

The infamous Cambodian dictator Pol Pot kept the country’s communist party underground, instead promoting anti-imperialist principles and relying on the deliberately vague term Angkar, meaning “the organization.”

After defeating a US-backed government in 1975, Pol Pot’s totalitarian regime eliminated private property and forcibly deported people to labor camps in the countryside.

In Nicaragua, Sandinista leader Daniel Ortega seized power from the Somoza regime and later declared that “political pluralism and a mixed economy” were essential to the revolution. His Marxist-Leninist movement nevertheless went on to take control of major agricultural enterprises and corporations.

Although even his strongest critics have not compared him to a dictator, Abdul El-Sayed, a Democratic candidate for the Michigan Senate with ties to senior radicals in the Democratic Socialists of America, insisted this week that he is a “capitalist.” His campaign told The Post that he has said he is “not a socialist” and “has never been a member of the DSA.”
