New York Attorney General Letitia James laughed awkwardly when questioned about the Cornell 7 rape investigation, declining to confirm reports that she may be required to recuse herself and retain an independent attorney.
“We’re here today to talk about elections, early elections,” James told The Post on Sunday as she campaigned in Crown Heights.
When asked whether she was refusing to address the investigation, James repeated, “We’re here to talk about early elections.”
“I want to talk about early elections. Cornell’s very serious, and we’ll have something to say about that too,” she said.

James likewise declined to say whether she planned to step aside, telling The Post, “We’re gonna have something to say about that too, but today is about early elections.”
Sources said James was appointed by Gov. Kathy Hochul to examine allegations from a Cornell University student, identified only as Jane Doe, who says she was raped by seven fraternity members in 2024.
The attorney general faced criticism after social media posts surfaced in which she expressed sympathy for the alleged victim before being appointed to lead the inquiry. Critics argued the comments could raise questions about her impartiality, while President Trump and others called on her to recuse herself.
James’ office said Saturday that she had been exploring the possibility of hiring outside counsel before questions arose about whether she should withdraw from the investigation. She has not publicly responded in detail to the controversy.
