An individual believed to be a notorious figure in the Australian criminal underworld has reportedly been apprehended in Iraq. This individual has been described as “one of the most dangerous men in the world.”

The Supreme Judicial Council of Iraq announced that Kazem Hamad, also known as “Kadhim Malik Hamad Rabah al-Hajami,” has been arrested in relation to an investigation into drug-related crimes.

According to a police intelligence report obtained by Nine newspaper The Age, Hamad is believed to be a major underworld figure who looms large in Melbourne’s illicit tobacco scene.

In 2023, Hamad was deported back to Iraq from Australia following the completion of a prison sentence for drug offenses.

According to a report cited by The Age, the Hamad syndicate has been implicated in numerous serious criminal activities, including arson, extortion, shootings, and involvement in the illegal tobacco trade, alongside the smuggling and distribution of illicit tobacco products.

The statement from the Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council indicates that Hamad’s arrest came as a result of an official request from Australia.

The official release further describes Hamad as “one of the most dangerous wanted men in the world.”

It accused Hamad of involvement with prominent Australian and Middle Eastern crime gangs.

Hamad is suspected of coordinating the arson attack that killed innocent Melbourne woman Katie Tangey in January 2025 at a Truganina home.

Police said the alleged attack was targeted but took place at the wrong address, and that Tangey had no link to the illicit tobacco trade.
