Several college-age activists accused of plotting to threaten University of Michigan officials were released on bond after being charged earlier this week. Prosecutors allege the group targeted university leaders over the school’s refusal to divest from Israel.
Four of the eight defendants — Zainab Hakim, 23; Paige Feyock, 26; Jonathan Zou, 22; and Colin Weger, 24 — appeared in federal court Friday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Anthony Patti.
The hearing followed FBI Director Kash Patel’s announcement that seven people had been arrested in connection with the investigation.
After Hakim, Feyock, Zou and Weger entered not guilty pleas, Patti approved their release on bond, according to court records reviewed by News Agency.
As conditions of their release, the defendants must surrender their passports, avoid contact with alleged victims and co-defendants, and comply with GPS monitoring and travel limits, CBS News reported.
A photo released in the case appears to show threatening graffiti spray-painted on the Jewish Federation building on the first anniversary of the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attacks in Israel, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan.
