Oregon Gov. Threatens to Investigate Agents Enforcing Immigration Laws

Oregon’s Governor Tina Kotek (D) has issued a warning that the state may pursue investigations and legal action against federal agents enforcing U.S. immigration laws within Oregon’s borders.

In an Instagram video, Kotek expressed her concerns over the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), accusing it of engaging in “violent actions” that incite fear under the guise of immigration enforcement. She emphasized that Oregon is prepared to scrutinize any misconduct and hold federal officers accountable for their actions.

“I, like you, uphold the rule of law and the safety of our communities,” Kotek stated. “We also pride ourselves on being a welcoming state where immigrants and refugees contribute to our prosperity. The persistent aggressive actions by the federal Department of Homeland Security—targeting Oregonians and instilling fear under ‘immigration enforcement’—are unacceptable.”

Kotek further criticized the use of “excessive force and reckless tactics,” arguing that such approaches endanger both bystanders and law enforcement officers, deviating from true public safety practices.

“Oregon is keeping a vigilant eye on all ICE activities,” Kotek asserted. “We will investigate any wrongdoing, and federal officers who violate Oregon law will face consequences, just like anyone else. Reckless or unconstitutional behavior will not be tolerated in our state.”

In an October interview with CBS News, Kotek accused federal agents of exacerbating tensions with protesters in Portland, urging them to “stand down and prioritize de-escalation” efforts.

“[T]his set of demonstrations that are happening are managed by local law enforcement, as they should be,” Kotek said at the time. “People have the right to lawfully protest, but if they cross the line, they are being held accountable. If criminal activity occurs, they are being held accountable. This is what free speech looks like, and I believe the federal government can continue to do the work right here.”
