Boy, 12, killed after suspect opened fire during brawl near theater district, police say

A 12-year-old boy was fatally shot Sunday night after gunfire erupted during what police described as a “brawl” in Nashville’s theater district.

The victim, identified as Damarion Morehead, was shot in the head after a fight involving an estimated six to seven people broke out near the intersection of Representative John Lewis Way and Deaderick Street, close to the Tennessee Performing Arts Center.

Morehead was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Authorities with the Metro Nashville Police Department arrested 24-year-old Devin Orr, identified by investigators as the suspected shooter. Police said video from the scene helped them piece together what happened during the confrontation.

“During the brawl, Orr reached into his waistband to retrieve a handgun. At this point, persons involved in the fight began to run away. Shots were fired and Morehead fell to the ground,” the Metro Nashville Police Department said in a statement.
