An overloaded ship carrying 240 migrants was intercepted near the Turks and Caicos Islands as it began taking on water, sparking a swift response to avert a possible tragedy at sea.
The U.S. Coast Guard reported that, on Sunday, it collaborated with U.S. Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations and the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force (RTCIPF) to halt the vessel, which was transporting individuals who identified themselves as Haitian nationals.
As detailed in a Coast Guard news release, officials were alerted to an “illegal migrant voyage” roughly 15 miles south of the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Footage shared by the Coast Guard captured the moment when their crews joined local authorities in securing and towing the dangerously packed vessel.
After the interception, the Turks and Caicos Islands Border Force assumed responsibility for the vessel and its occupants, according to the Coast Guard.
