Staff Report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – DeShawn Russ, a 35-year-old resident of Jacksonville, has admitted guilt in a federal court regarding charges of possessing ammunition as a felon. The announcement came from John P. Heekin, the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Florida.

U.S. Attorney Heekin expressed his gratitude for the efficient investigative efforts by both state and federal law enforcement agencies, highlighting that the apprehension of this repeat offender contributes significantly to public safety. “Thanks to our collaborative efforts, this individual will now face a lengthy federal prison term,” Heekin remarked. He emphasized that this case marks another triumph under Operation Take Back America, reaffirming the commitment to prosecuting such offenses to ensure community safety.

Initial Arrest Details

The incident leading to Russ’s arrest occurred on August 3, 2025, when an officer from the Gainesville Police Department observed Russ in a vehicle with the victim. During this encounter, Russ reportedly threatened to kill the victim and then himself, while allegedly wielding a firearm. He is accused of discharging a shot near the victim, which resulted in a bullet hole in the driver’s side window. Although no weapon was retrieved from the scene, authorities found a .380 caliber bullet in Russ’s possession. Due to his status as a convicted felon, Russ is legally barred from having firearms or ammunition.

Russ could face a sentence of up to 15 years in prison. His sentencing is set for June 16, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. in the United States Courthouse in Gainesville, under the jurisdiction of Chief United States District Judge Allen C. Winsor.

The case involved an investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the Gainesville Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Christie S. Utt.

This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime.
