Southern California dad killed in Venezuela earthquake hotel collapse

A Southern California family is mourning an unimaginable loss after a loved one was killed in last week’s deadly earthquake in Venezuela.

Romildo Batista de Lima had been traveling with his wife, Carlha Nacarid, when the powerful shaking hit the Latin American nation. During the quake, a wall at the hotel where they were staying gave way and collapsed onto the couple.

Both were taken to a hospital, according to a GoFundMe organized by de Lima’s son, but de Lima later died from his injuries. Nacarid survived, though she suffered serious injuries, including a broken leg and hip.

“My priority right now is to get his body from Venezuela to Brazil. That’s where he wanted to be buried,” Daniel de Lima told ABC7 Eyewitness News. “Trying to coordinate that with my Brazilian side of the family that’s over there. And at this moment he’s en route to Brazil where he wants to be laid to rest.”

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that a magnitude-7.2 earthquake struck about 100 miles west of Caracas, near San Felipe, at 6 p.m. last Wednesday. Just 39 seconds later, an even stronger 7.5-magnitude quake hit near the town of Yumare, roughly 27 miles away.
