Australian Border Force officers uncovered irregularities during a standard inspection of a heavy-duty diesel generator shipped from Mexico through Malaysia, sparking a significant investigation.
Experts from the Australian Federal Police (AFP) meticulously dismantled the machinery over three days, ultimately revealing a substantial stash of illegal drugs. This cache included 106 blocks of cocaine, 50 kilograms of methamphetamine packed in white plastic bags, and 3 kilograms of MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy.
The AFP has confiscated the drugs and is actively pursuing leads on the criminal syndicate suspected of orchestrating this smuggling operation.
Detective Acting Superintendent Stuart Kimbell has appealed for assistance from individuals who might have been approached to store these generators.
The police are also interested in speaking with anyone possessing mechanical or technical skills who might have been consulted regarding generator repairs or the sale of spare parts.
“This assortment of illegal drugs was likely intended for various criminal networks and targeted to be distributed across multiple communities,” Kimbell stated.
“Despite the elaborate attempt to conceal such a large quantity of drugs, the coordinated efforts of law enforcement ensured these substances never reached Australian streets.”
